Activities

The stratified sampling of ponds conducted in the framework of PONDERFUL includes the collection of environmental and biodiversity data, as well as the quantification of the carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emission levels in ponds across several bioclimatic conditions and ecoregions.

Collectively, these data will provide insight in:

• How the climate gradient in Europe and land use gradients affect environmental conditions in ponds and the ecological integrity of ponds,
• How the climate gradient affects the transition from permanent to temporary and ephemeral ponds,
• How the climate gradient affects species abundances, community composition and diversity,
• How the climate and land use gradient affect the feedback of ponds to the climate through their capacity to sequester carbon and through greenhouse gas emissions.
